Sputnik Fixture – First full frame miters a success!

Still have some tweaking to do but blown away by how well the fixtures worked.  Got a little tube clean up and prep to do before fillet brazing.  Henry James Jig needs some dialing in as well.

Sputnik Jig Setup

January 2, 2017 § Leave a comment

Experimenting with slotting tubing for dropouts on Sheldon Horizontal Mill.  Vise allows pass through for stays and keeps various diameters centered on slotting saw.  For tapered tubes the vise can be tilted to compensate and a round wire on the top of vee block makes for rigid setup.

Sputnik main tube fixture on the old horizontal mill.

Sputnik Chainstay Fixture on M22 Diamond Mill.

Another view of slotting setup.  Cut a bunch of straight 4130 to dial it in.

Initial setup in jig.  Got some more hours of cleanup and adjusting to do before brazing starts but happy with it so far.

Fork Progress

After some more practice notching, brazing and cleanup work I put together another fork as the start of my next frame set.  Thanks to Dave Bohm for the past critique on my earlier fork attempts.  Big take away from his comments – work on the bend and make it more uniform and less “dog leg”.  I think I got that much better this time and happy with the bender.  Used more FLUX per Dave’s comments as well!

Phil’s Frame – Front Triangle Prep Complete

Front triangle preparation is finished!  Seat tube/bottom bracket is complete as well as the down tube and head tube.  Next step, flux up those tubes and finish the rest of the main triangle welds.
